*البحر من ورائكم والعدوّ أمامكم

I have never been really fond of my name. I usually prefer to be called with nicknames, and I have had many of them being the youngest among my siblings. My preferred nickname is Tito, spelled with a strong stress on the second syllable (like the famous Marshal, if you know what I mean :p).

I developed an interest in my name as I moved to Europe: Tarek is pronounceable in all languages and can be easily memorised by everyone. It also has a nice set of possible meanings: the shooting star, the most shining star in the skies, or the last cosmic entity that is available for observation at dawn. I think my parents spotted my interest in astronomy before I was born!

I am also proud to share my name with Tarek Ibnu Zied, the warrior who conquered Spain and inscribed his name (well, our name!) on the rock, the Gibraltar.. the mount of Tarek.

*And this was by the way the address he gave to the troops: The sea is behind you, and the enemy in front of you...go conquer! (okay, the 'go conquer' bit is my own work, just a matter of emphasis really! :p)

  • Sorry for the unsuitable comment below...
    There's unfortunately always a dark side in History: Tarek was not that honest conqueror as he was described in manual books, he killed, robbed, raped, ... like any warrior; and even offered, with Mussa, to the Umeyyad khalifa some thousands of slaves and virgins.
    Let's just be objective and recognize mistakes we are ignoring.

  • Zayd a failli s'appeler Tarek. La raison du changement de dernière minute, c'est que son papa a préféré s'appeler Abu Zayd au lieu de Abu Tarek :-). Par contre, si un jour il aura un petit frère, il y a de fortes chances qu'on l'appelle Tarek!

    Napoleon was not a saint, he was a criminal too looking for illusionary glory, but we must admit that we owe him a lot: for making us aware of our situation whereas we have been thinking that we were the masters of the world.
    Tarek (the historical) did whatever any warrior could do, that's logical at the time, but cruel. Yes, I admire the Andalusian civilization, and if I could choose an epoch to live in, my preferred would be the in the gold period of Andalusia. Tarek has conquered the peninsula, and then, all the Andalusian progress is due to him, but we can't deny that he did bad; you see, it's like the followers Castillian who persecuted Muslims, Jews and protestants with the ugliest ways of torture, kicked them, burned and stole their goods, hang them and burned them alive, cut their months and ears, ... But they did something great for Humanity: They discovered a fertile and rich land equal to Africa and Europe combined, and their prosperity was based on it (Yes, they persecuted the local population too); and it's the same way: a dark and bloody epoch followed by a Glory.
    Being from our land doesn't mean being incontestably "saint"; people that make glory could be for example Hannibal (he was only defending his land), Saladin (The tolerance reference), Ferhat Hachet (never killed anybody), but sorry again, Tarek Ibnu Zied is not an icon...

    Finally, someone who got shocked!
    I don't remember the reference, I will look for it later, but talking of propaganda, Spaniards themselves apologize for Inquisitions and are thankful to the Arabic contribution to their history, so why making propaganda? There are a lot of lies in our history that we turn to glory; why are "we" always the best and "they" are the evil ones? "They" are certainly not innocent, but at least, "they" are able to say the truth about "themselves" and to revise "their" history, which is a tabu for "us".
